# How do I manage suspended students and when should I unenroll them from the course?

> ℹ️ What is the difference between an **unenrolled **student and a **suspended** student?
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ **Unenrolled:** unenrolled students are students who are deleted from the course, along with all of their previously submitted work.
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ **Suspended: **Suspended students are students who have likely withdrawn/dropped the course. This means that the student is not active in the course, but they can be reactivated back into the course. While a student is suspended their submitted course work will be saved.

Instead of **unenrolling **students**,** instructors may wish to keep **suspended **students in the course in case the instructor plans to re-enroll the student back into the course and not lose the student’s recorded work. But by doing so, instructors may find that having so many **suspended **students in the course makes it difficult to navigate the course. To manage these **suspended **students, please follow the steps below:

1. Access the course you wish to manage and select ***Participants*** from the top menu.

2. In the ***Participants ***section, you can now view all the participants in the course. Using the example below, Student A is **Suspended**, meaning that they are no longer active in the course but they have not yet been unenrolled.

3. If you only want to see certain groups of students (such as only those **active** in the course) please **apply conditions** to the participants list. You can add additional conditions by selecting*** Add condition***. Once the conditions have been entered select ***Apply Filters***. In doing so, only students active in the course are displayed. Therefore any suspended students will not be visible.

5. If you click on ***Grades*** in the top menu, this will take you to the gradebook section and only display students **active** in the course.

> ⚠️ Please Note:
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ If it is **AFTER **the ADD/DROP date it is recommended that the instructor keeps suspended students as **Suspended **and not **Unenroll **them as the student may have submitted significant work at this point in the semester (which will be lost once the student is unenrolled from the course).
