Within Kaltura Virtual Classroom, instructors have access to a wide range of options that can be configured to suit their needs. To access these options, click the gear icon on the upper bar of a virtual classroom.
# Device Settings
In the virtual classroom, all users, including both instructors and students, can customize their preferences for the webcam, microphone, and audio output devices they wish to utilize during the session.

## Room Mode
Instructors or moderators can change the class mode of the virtual classroom from **Standard room **to **Large room** mode.
## Standard room
In the default setting of virtual classrooms, they are configured as Standard rooms. When students/participants join a virtual class, they receive a prompt to activate their devices. If they have previously used a Kaltura Virtual Classroom, their webcam and microphone devices are automatically activated. Upon device activation, students/participants are promptly added to the stage and granted the capability to unmute or mute their microphones and enable or disable their webcams.
## Large room
If you have a significant number of students/participants, nearing 100 or more, or if you prefer to have more control over who is added to the stage, the Large room class mode is recommended. In this mode, students/participants are not prompted to activate their devices upon entering the live session. If participants choose to activate their devices using the controls in the upper bar, they are not automatically added to the stage. Instead, you can manually add them to the stage by utilizing the **Live** button in the participant list, giving you greater flexibility in managing the stage participants.

💡The chosen class mode is automatically saved and remains selected even when you exit the virtual classroom and return at a later time.
## Default Permissions
Instructors/moderators can give specific students/participants additional permissions to further collaborate in the live session. Additional permissions enable specific participants to:
- Draw on Whiteboard
- Play shared files
- Share their screen
- Write notes
- View Participants List
💡If you wish to remove an individual's permissions, simply find their name in the participant list and click off that individual permission you wish to remove.
## Set Individual Participant Permissions
Within the virtual classroom, instructors/moderators can alter the permissions of their participants individually.
1. In the Participant list, find the student/participant you want to give additional permission to.
2. Click the drop-down arrow (v) that displays when your cursor hovers over the participant’s name.
You have a choice of what permissions you can set. You can select **Set** **as a Moderator** to give a student/participant full moderator permissions. Moderators will have an icon (a star) next to their names.
💡The instructor holds the permanent role of moderator in the room and has the authority to designate participants as session moderators, allowing them to share content and assist in managing the virtual class.
💡 It's important to note that session moderators lack the ability to modify the permissions of others, a capability exclusive to the permanent moderator.
1. Click on ⚙️**More Permissions** to launch a permissions pop-up to give a student/participant specific permissions.
2. **Demote users to view only**: This means the student/participant can observe and listen to the session but cannot be seen or heard by others.
3. **Remove user from room**: This means the student/participant is removed from the classroom. However, they retain the option to rejoin the classroom later.
💡Permissions within each virtual class are session-based, which means that granting specific students/participants additional permissions in one class does not automatically carry over to their subsequent classes.
# Chat Settings
Instructors/moderators have the ability to grant participants access to different chat permissions.
Before your virtual class begins, you can decide which Chat Settings will be accessible by your students/participants.
Click **Chat Settings** and under **Chat Permissions**, choose which chat permission you want all participants to have:
- Group Chat
- Ask Questions Chat
- 1:1 Chat
## Clear Chat History
If permitted, every participant in the room can access the chat feature. Upon entering the virtual classroom, students/participants can view the most recent 20 messages in the chat. Instructors/Moderators can clear the chat history after a session, removing the messages from display within the room.
💡It is important to note that clearing the chat history does not delete the records from Kaltura Session Stats [link to Confluence article]; it solely clears the messages from being visible in the room.
Click **Chat Settings,** and under **Moderation**, select **Clear chat**.
**Chat Notifications**
Click **Chat Settings,** and under **Notifications**, select **Chat notifications**.
A red icon will appear next to the chat tool to notify participants whenever a new message is sent.
## Browser Focus
The Browser Focus feature offers real-time alerts to instructors and moderators when a participant's attention is diverted from the virtual classroom, webinar, or session. Once enabled, instructors receive alerts indicating the focus status of various participants. These alerts can be observed on the webcams of unfocused participants and in the participants list.
**Webcam & Participant List Unfocused Alerts**
Browser Focus alerts are triggered when a participant navigates away from the virtual classroom, webinar, or session. For instance, if a student opens another browser tab and begins browsing a different website, instructors receive an alert specific to that user.
> ℹ️ ❗**IMPORTANT**❗ It is crucial to note that Browser Focus is just one metric of additional information and should be considered alongside other factors like attendance and assessment. For instance, if a participant opens a notes application on their device, they may be labeled as out of focus. However, they might simply take notes and remain engaged in the session.
## Enable/Disable Browser Focus
Click **Browser Focus**:
- By default, showing focus alerts in the Participant List is disabled. Click the checkbox corresponding to **Show alerts in the participant list **to enable browser alert notifications corresponding to participants in the participant list.
- By default, showing focus alerts on Webcams is disabled. Click the checkbox corresponding to **Show Alerts on webcams** to enable browser alert notifications on participants' webcams.
💡Your selection is automatically saved for all subsequent classes.
