When grading assignments, the default setting is to release items to students as soon as you have graded them. If you want to defer the release of graded items until all items are graded, then you need to enable the **marking workflow**. This will enable a variety of grading stages that can be set. It will also enable the ability to assign different markers to specific students. You can also assign different teachers to mark different students’ assignments by using **marking allocation**.** **

## Enable Marking Workflow and Marking Allocation

1. Click the stacked 3 dot menu from a previously created assignment. From the drop-down menu select **Edit settings**. Scroll down to the Grade settings. (If creating an assignment from scratch, also scroll to Grade settings)
2. In the drop-down adjacent to **Use marking workflow**, select **Yes**. If you want to enable the ability to assign specific markers to grade-specific students select **Yes** in the drop-down menu adjacent to **Use marking allocation**.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click **SAVE AND DISPLAY**.

## How to Set Marking Workflow Stages and Allocate Markers

There are several methods available to set **Marking workflow stages** and **Allocate markers**, each is detailed below.

### Set Marking Workflow as You Mark

1. Click on the assignment you want to grade and click **Grade**.
2. Complete your marking as you would normally, and when you are finished on the right-hand side of the marking page, choose a **marking workflow state** from the drop-down menu. In most instances, you would select **Ready for release** as you mark assignments, and then change the workflow state to **Released** once all assignments are marked.

**Not marked**: This is the default marking state.
**In marking**: This setting may be useful if more than one instructor will be marking the assignments. This will signify to other markers that someone else is marking this assignment.
**Marking completed**: Signifies that marking is finished, and it is ready for the review stage.
**Ready for release**: All stages of marking are complete, and it is ready to be released to the student.
**Released**: This will release the assignment back to the student as soon as you click either **SAVE CHANGES** or **SAVE AND SHOW NEXT**.

3. To allocate a marker for a particular student’s assignment, select the desired name from the drop-down menu below **Allocated marker**.

4. Click **SAVE CHANGES** or **SAVE AND SHOW NEXT** when marking is complete.

### Set Marking Workflow and Set Allocated Marker in Bulk

The most likely method for marking assignments would have you setting the marking workflow to **Ready for release** while going through individual assignments, and then changing all workflow states to **Released** when all marking is complete. Completing the final **Released** step** **in bulk saves time individually updating each assignment. Follow these steps to release all assignments at once. Similar steps to **Set allocated markers** are also outlined.

1. Click on the assignment you wish to mark, and then on the next screen click **View all submissions**.
2. Check the topmost box under the **Select** column to select all student submissions. (**Note:** If you have selected either Rubric or Marking guide as the **Grading method**, you will not be able to bulk allocate markers or adjust marking workflow. You will still be able to adjust these items individually as outlined in the other sections of this tutorial).
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and in the drop-down menu adjacent to **With selected… **select **Set marking workflow state** and then click **GO**.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the next screen and set the desired workflow stage to **Released** to finish the marking process and return results to students. In the drop-down menu adjacent to **Notify students** you can also choose to notify students by email. Click **SAVE CHANGES** when finished.
5. To allocate specific markers to an assignment repeat step 1 and 2 above. Scroll to the bottom of the submission page and select the desired marker from With selected to **Set** **Allocated marker**. Click **SAVE CHANGES**.

### Set Marking Workflow and Set Allocated Marker Outside of Marking Assignments

If you wish to set the **Marking workflow**, or use **Set allocated markers** while not actively marking, you can do so by following these steps.

1. Click on the assignment you wish to mark, and then on the next screen click **View all submissions**.
2. On the next screen you can select the marking workflow for individual student submissions by selecting the checkbox next to the student’s name. Then underneath the submission list go to With selected to **Set allocated marker **and** Go**.
3. You can allocate a specific teacher to mark the assignment by selecting the marker’s name from the **Allocated Marker** drop-down menu. Complete this action for each student you wish to adjust.

## Marking Workflow Options

When you return to marking, by selecting an assignment and clicking **View all submissions**, as pictured below, you have filters available to facilitate marking under **Options**. Adjacent to **Filter**, you have options to filter and view only specific assignments. Adjusting the **Marker filter** will reveal only assignments allocated to a specific marker. Under the **Workflow filter** you can filter assignments based on workflow state.
