The completion settings in mêskanâs can affect the way that many different areas behave and interact with other areas of mêskanâs. This tutorial will show you how to turn the completion settings (and related settings) on. Then, briefly describe the various activities and situations in which these settings can have an effect.

## Initial Setup

To enable and display completion tracking, click **Settings** at the top of the course main mêskanâs page under the course title.

Locate and click the **Completion tracking** menu, and select **Yes** next to the **Enable completion tracking** setting.

To display the conditions that must be met for an activity to be considered complete on the main course page, select **Yes** beside the **Show activity completion** **conditions** setting. (Note that the conditions will always be displayed on the activity page; this setting only determines if the same information is also available on the course page.)

A separate but related setting can be found two items higher on the same page. In the **Appearance** menu, selecting **Yes** beside the **Show activity dates** will display this information on the main course page. As is the case with the **Show activity completion conditions** setting described above, the activity dates are always available within the activity itself.

**After**

Regardless of whether this information is available on the main course page, date information is always available after clicking into the activity itself.

# Approach A: Allow Students to Monitor their Own Progress

To allow students to monitor and record their own progress, within that activity’s **Edit settings** menu, find the **Activity completion** menu, and select **Students must manually mark the activity as done**.

# Approach B: Instructor Sets Completion Conditions

The instructor can set specific conditions as to what must be achieved for an activity to be considered complete. This approach is primarily so students (and instructors) can monitor student progress, but it also ensures that students don’t simply mark all activities as complete without completing the expected action.

A variety of conditions can be set, which can be as simple as ensuring that **Students must view this activity **in the settings.

### Use #1: Using one activity as a pre-requisite for another activity

One reason to set one activity as a pre-requisite for another activity is to ensure that the activities are completed in order. To accomplish this, you must set the criterion for completion in the first activity and then make access to the second activity dependent on the completion of the first activity.

#### **Part 1: The first activity**

If you want one activity to be completed before another activity becomes available, you must set the condition that will determine if the first activity is complete. The options that are available depend on the type of activity you are working with at that time.

In this example, a minimum grade on a review quiz must be achieved before the midterm exam becomes available. (Illustrative purposes only; not generally recommended!)

In the **Grade** menu, the **Grade to pass** is set at 80%. Unlimited attempts are allowed to ensure that all students will eventually be able to achieve this grade.

In the Completion Conditions menu, the following settings are used.

### **Part 2: The second activity**

Now that the completion conditions have been set in the first activity, it is time to place the completion condition on the second activity.

In the second activity’s settings, open the **Restrict access** menu and click on **Add restriction**.

In the dialogue box that opens, select **Activity Completion**.

Complete the required information on the screen that appears. As you will see, a variety of options and settings are available. The settings in the image indicate that the student **must **complete** Quiz 1 **and **must be complete with pass grade.**

On the course main page, this is what students will see. Note that the Review Quiz 2 is greyed out, as it is not yet available. Conditions and expectations are made clear to students.

### Use #2: Course Completion

You may wish to use the **Course completion** setting if you want students to complete either all or a pre-determined list of activities for them to be given credit for a course. This approach is particularly well-suited to asynchronous courses.

To enable and customize **Course completion**, open the Actions menu by clicking **More** in the top-right corner of the main mêskanâs page. On the menu that opens, click on **Course completion**.

On the screen that opens, work through the options to determine what conditions have to be met for the course to be considered complete.

> ℹ️ Note: In addition to these course-level settings, you must also enter completion settings for all of the activities that you want to be included in the course completion equation.

### Use #3: Monitoring student activity

With completion settings set in activities, you can see, at a glance, how many students have completed the activity. You can also check on individual students to see which activities they have completed.

To view the Activity completion spreadsheet, open the Actions menu by clicking on the **Reports** on the top main mêskanâs page.

![image](media://65177d34-decb-4fd8-b7b1-6586c7d5eaa0)

On the page that opens, select **Activity completion** in the **Reports** section of the page.

![image](media://cb812756-0831-4743-a881-85f052f5f470)

The page that opens will display information about the students in your class and the activities that you have designated as having an activity completion status. Activities that do not have a completion status will not appear.
