## Adding Extra Credit (Bonus Mark)

In the gradebook, **Extra Credit** refers to points that can be added to a student's grade for a particular grade item or category. It allows faculty to reward students who have demonstrated exceptional performance or put extra effort into their coursework. The faculty can add Extra credit points manually or automatically calculate based on the grade setup.

Extra credit can be added as a separate activity, such as a quiz, assignment, or a manual grade item in the gradebook. It allows students to earn additional points beyond the maximum possible score for a specific assignment or activity. Extra credit can be used to encourage students to go above and beyond and to reward exceptional performance or effort.

*In the example below, a separate quiz activity, including a bonus question, has been added to the course main page and is available for students to finish. This activity will generate a grade item in the gradebook.*

Select **Grades** from the top navigation menu, then from the drop-down menu, select **Gradebook setup**.

Under **Parent Category**, (1) check the **Weight Adjusted** box, (2) add the “Percentage Value” (this value will impact the entire gradebook calculation as the bonus questions grade item is not within any categories), (3) check **Extra Credit** box, (4) click **Save Changes**.

A "**+**" will be added to gradebook setup area to specify the **Extra credit**. Please note that the percentage value will impact the entire gradebook by %2.5% for this example.

**Important Note**: When an extra credit grade item is added to a category with a specific weighting, the total weight of the category will not exceed the specified weighting. This means that even if a student earns full points on the extra credit item, the category's weight will not exceed the maximum set by the faculty.

**Tip:** If needed, add this item to a category and move it back to the gradebook level.
