When creating a new quiz, the first step is to create a new question bank category. This step allows the questions to facilitate finding, using, and transferring questions between courses. DO NOT leave the question category as the default setting.
## Creating a New Question Bank Category > Macro (anchor)
Using the default category when composing questions would put all the questions in this course into a single-question category. If moving a single question from this course to another course, the *entire* question bank would come with it. Compounded over several terms, moving a simple introductory diagnostic quiz from course to course and from instructor to instructor could create a massive question bank, which, over time, could become massive.
In the image above, the question category **Geography quiz** has been created, so the questions being composed will be placed in that category. The following section will show how to get to this point.
### How to Create a New Question Bank Category
Start creating a new question bank category on the course's main page. Click **More** from the top menu and select **Question Bank** from the drop-down menu.
Then select Categories from the drop down menu. From the next screen, click **Add Category**.
Choose a descriptive **Name** for the new category. If the category being created is a subcategory of a larger category, choose the Parent category (i.e., the category under which the new category is to be nested). If not, leave the default **Parent category**, which is the course name. Click **ADD CATEGORY**.
When creating questions, if the question category was not added, it will be prompted to **UPDATE THE CATEGORY**. Do so by choosing a category from the drop-down menu.
## Changing a Question’s Category After the Fact
It is also possible to change a question’s category after the question has been created and saved. Select the question from the **Question bank** view. Select the checkbox next to the question, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click **With selected **and **Move to…**. In the **Move the selected questions** screen, select the category that the question will be moved to. Then click **Move To**.
## Question Naming Conventions
Add a name for each question created. For questions to appear in a particular sequence, it is best to number the questions, starting with single-digit numbers with a leading zero, e.g., 01, 02, and so on. The numbering is important because it will move this quiz to a new mêskanâs course, and the questions will be reordered based on the question type. Students will only see the actual question and not the numbering name.
## Adding New Questions to a Quiz
The creation of a new quiz is explained in the **Quiz Setup** document. Begin adding questions by clicking the stacked three-dot menu to the right of the quiz, then **Edit settings**.
Then select **Questions** from the menu underneath the Quiz title. First, set the **Maximum grade**. (Recommend 100, so scores will be reported as percentages in the gradebook.) Then click **Save**.
Click **Add** to add a question.
In the menu that appears, choose **+ a new question**.
A variety of question types can be chosen from.
Click the question type, then click **Add**.
## Adding Questions from a Question Bank
Once a certain number of questions is added to the question bank, start to reuse those questions. To view more on this topic, click: [creating and using question bank categories](#new-category).
The final step in creating a quiz (explained in the **Quiz Setup** tutorial) is to click the **Save and display** button at the bottom of the page. The next screen is where to start the process of adding questions. There are two ways to begin adding questions. Begin adding questions by clicking the stacked three-dot menu to the right of the quiz, then **Edit settings**. Then select **Question bank**.
First, select **Categories** from the **Questions** drop-down menu.
Now, select a category.
If tags are used when creating the questions, you can also filter by tags.
Click **Create a new question**.
### Adding a Random Question

The final step in creating a quiz (explained in the **Quiz Setup** document) is to click the **SAVE AND DISPLAY** button at the bottom of the page.
First, set the **Maximum grade**. (Recommend 100, so scores will be reported as percentages in the gradebook.) Then click **Save**.
Begin adding questions by clicking **Add** to add a question. In the menu that appears, choose **+ a random question**.
Select a category you would like to have the random question from.
If using tags when creating the questions, can also filter by tags.
Choose the **Number of random questions** to add to the quiz, then scroll to the bottom and click **Add Random Question**.
### Setting Point Values
By default, all questions are worth one point. To change this, click on **Edit settings**.
Now, click on the **Questions** tab.
Point values can be adjusted by clicking on the pencil Edit icon, entering the desired point value, and then clicking Enter or Return. If you click away, the change will not be saved.
To have the grade for a quiz reported as a percentage, change the Maximum grade to 100 and click **Save**.
