Quizzes can vastly improve efficiency in grading. It is worth the investment in time to learn how to use the available tools. This document deals with automatic grade insertion settings, checking grades, correcting mistakes in a quiz, grading questions manually, and overriding grades. How to access a quiz’s statistics is also shown.

## Gradebook Settings in Quiz Setup

Many question types are graded automatically as soon as the student finishes writing the quiz. The results from these questions are automatically added to the grade book, and the results category must be set.

When setting up the quiz, choose which **Grade category** in the grade book the quiz grade will be added to. (See the **Gradebook Setup and Use** resource for help adding grade categories to the grade book.) Setting a Grade to pass is unnecessary unless needed as a completion setting. Choose the number of **Attempts allowed** (the default is **Unlimited**) and which grade to report to the grade book (highest, average, first, or last attempt).

## Checking Grades

After a class has completed a quiz, there are a few options for reviewing the quiz.

Go to the main page of the course. Click on **Grades** on the top main menu under the course title.

![image](media://440893f1-4a7d-4c3c-aeb7-0b506d5d37ed)

A **Grader report** will appear. There are filters to customize the information. Class average grades are at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

## Correcting a Mistaken Answer

For example, if a student is having trouble with a question, reviewing that question and the answer provided in the quiz is a good idea. To check an answer, first click on the Quiz link.

![image](media://ec16a647-fc37-41b4-9068-60e5e625fbfc)

Now, click on the Results tab.

![image](media://e475d324-4bac-405c-96d1-9fa5d406675e)

Clicking on a student’s score opens the question, the student’s answer, and the correct answer provided when the quiz is composed. A quick look shows that a mistake was made when this question was prepared.

![image](media://f7173704-fa78-4aab-a715-03485e29bcea)

To override a grade for one student, click on **Make comment or override mark**. If you discover an error in the quiz and wish to fix and regrade it, work through the following steps.

Navigate back to **Edit Settings** of the quiz from the three-dot menu. From the top menu, select **Questions**. Click on the title of the relevant question, correct the answer, and then click on **Save Changes**.

![image](media://19969132-ae78-41d9-ba5e-621e61c4a4cb)

Navigate back to the quiz menu and select **Results**. Click the **Regrade attempts** button.

![image](media://20699338-f265-4c9f-a03f-df3c52ba2269)

Select which questions and attempts you wish to regrade; for this example, it is set to All attempts and All questions. It is best to perform a dry run before performing the regrade. This will let you see the effects of a regrade and detect any possible errors. Click** Dry run.**

The changes that result from the **Dry run** are visible here.

![image](media://73835df5-8dd5-43f4-871a-0abec1ee157c)

To make the changes that resulted from the regrade dry run permanent, click **Commit regrade.**

## Manual Grading

Certain questions, such as essay questions, must be graded manually. To grade these questions individually, click where it says **Requires grading**.

![image](media://ae98da9e-5bfd-486b-8a0d-05490d6effb4)

The screen that opens will show the student's answer. Click on **Make comment or override mark** to comment (optional) and enter a grade for this question.

![image](media://e77653fe-7d06-4cb5-bd13-cfc89bb01d39)

Alternatively, to move through all student answers, go to the quiz’s main page, click the **Results** and select **Manual grading** from the drop-down menu to the left.

![image](media://c289fba8-7425-4fd3-8937-697eba1b3e59)

On the screen that appears, click **grade** (to see all the answers to this question that are yet to be graded) or **grade all** (to see all answers to this question, regardless of completion status).

![image](media://d937d514-503d-43f8-8472-4233f76ce51b)

On the screen that opens, set the preferences for how the students’ answers are presented to grade. When done grading the answers on the page, click **Save and show next**, at the bottom of the screen.

**Note:** Be sure to grade the question based on the number of points that the question is worth. For example, if the question is worth 10 points, but the grade is a percentage, say, 85%, this will not work. There is no warning if this mistake is made; the grade won’t be saved.

## Editing Grades (Including Assigning Zeros)

Extenuating circumstances may require manual reassigning of grades. These changes can be entered into the gradebook while the integrity of the original quiz is preserved.

> ℹ️ **Why do I Need to Assign Zeros?**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ One of the first steps in creating the gradebook is to check the tick box beside **Exclude empty grades**. This ensures that students were not temporarily assigned zeros for work that has not yet been graded. If assigning a zero grade (e.g., the student didn’t write the quiz), the zero must be added manually. Failure to add a zero has the effect of exempting the student from the quiz.

First, select **Grades **from the menu. Then go to **Grader report** and select the **Grader report**.

![image](media://52d41e4b-32ed-4919-a6b5-b107ab8bcfeb)

The screen that is now visible shows a wide spreadsheet. Typically, users must scroll to the right to find the relevant column. This example uses the **Midterm** as an example grade to modify.

![image](media://2a43c738-a2ad-4064-a24f-73cb9fdf1e23)

Click **Turn editing on** at the top right of the screen.

The screen updates, and entering or editing grades is now possible.

![image](media://dde046cb-b905-43e7-a382-2f00232a1d64)

Once grades have been added or edited, click **Save changes** in the lower-left corner of the screen. To protect the gradebook from accidental changes, click on the **Turn editing off** button in the top-right corner of the screen, where the **Turn editing on** button is.

Note that when grades are overridden, the cell surrounding the text box is highlighted (not pictured). This is to call attention to the fact that the grade has been entered or changed manually.

## Assigning Bulk Zeros

If a significant number of students do not write a quiz, there is an efficient way to add many zeros at the same time. Select the Grades tab, then Single view from the menu.

![image](media://31ada774-ac2b-4004-be6d-be8fd7a0d79f)

Now select a grade item from the **Select a grade item** dropdown. I will be choosing Assignment 2.

![image](media://540d0f5a-d51e-485b-aaae-8c1a5dcc3c1b)

Choose **Bulk insert grades** from the **Actions** menu.

![image](media://edf6757e-8762-423e-9f9d-7c75a41af647)

Then select **Empty grades** and **0**. Finally, click Save in the lower-right corner of the screen.

## Statistical Analysis

To access statistical analysis of quizzes, select **Statistics** from the drop-down menu on the quiz’s **Results** page.
