The Choice activity allows students to gather opinions or choices from students on a *single* multiple-choice question. This activity can be used to gauge students’ opinions about course progress, subject-matter interests, meeting times, study group formation, or any other issue that can be settled (or at least moved forward) with a single question.

> ℹ️ Note: let students know that their responses are *not* anonymous; the instructor can always see the option chosen by the student.

## Setup

Turn **Edit mode** on in the top-right corner of the main mêskanâs page.

There are several options available on the page that opens.

The **Choice name** is the title or topic of the Choice activity.

Put the question to be answered in the **Description** text box.

To let students see the question before they open the Choice activity, check the **Display description on the course page** check box.

Recommend choosing **Display vertically**.

Under the **Options** choice options can be set. The **Limit the number of responses allowed** option is useful if organizing information for a purpose for which the choices have an upper limit, such as presentation or study groups. Different limits can be set for each answer choice.

The **Availability** option can be used to control student access to the question. (This can also be achieved by using the Show/Hide options on the main page.) The **Show preview** option allows students to see and consider the question before it becomes available to be answered.

The options in the **Results** menu control if, when, and how much information is shared with students. If **Publish results** is chosen, a new drop-down menu will appear to decide whether to publish the results anonymously. Selecting the **Show column for unanswered** options allows the instructor to see at a glance how many students have yet to respond to the question. Having this option selected also allows the instructor to make a selection on behalf of students who do not answer the question, if needed. This process is explained in the [Viewing the Results](#viewing-results) section of this document.

Consider setting the **Common module settings** under **Availability**, which can also be set on the main course page.

For settings such as: students to complete a quiz before they answer a question about it. Go to **Restrict access** and **Activity Completion**.

When finished, click on **SAVE AND DISPLAY**.

## Viewing the Results> Macro (anchor)

To view student responses, click **Responses** in the menu.

On the screen that opens, the results can be viewed. If the situation warrants, instructors can select students who have not yet answered and make an answer choice for them.
