This article will show you how to set up a survey tool in your course shell in mêskanâs.

---

# Introduction

The Survey activity is probably not what you are expecting. It contains preconfigured surveys that explore various aspects of online learning. The three types of surveys available are:

- ATTLS (Attitudes to Thinking and Learning Survey)
- Critical Incidents Survey
- COLLES (Constructivist On-Line Learning Environment Survey) – three versions of this type.
  - COLLES (Actual)
  - COLLES (Preferred and Actual)
  - COLLES (Preferred)

> ℹ️ The questions in these surveys cannot be modified. If you want to create your own survey to gather feedback from participants, then choose the **Feedback** activity.

# Creating a Survey Activity

Turn **Edit mode** on in the top-right corner of the main mêskanâs page.

Locate the area where you want to insert the Survey activity and click the **+ Activity or resource** link.

## General

Enter a name for the Survey activity and choose which type of survey you want to use from the dropdown menu.

If you are not sure which survey type you want to use, it takes only a few minutes to preview all the surveys. To do this, select one of the survey types, and then save the survey activity by clicking **SAVE AND DISPLAY** at the bottom of the screen.

The survey will display, and you can preview the questions. To preview a different survey, click on the **Settings** link above the survey and choose a different survey.

Repeat this process until you select a survey. If you decide that none of the surveys meet your expectations, delete the Survey activity on the course main page. To construct your own survey, explore the **Feedback** tutorial.

If desired, add a description in the **Description** text box and check the **Display description on the course page** option.

## Common Module Settings

The default **Availability** is set to show on the course page. Select **Hide from students** on the drop-down menu if you wish to hide this survey.

If you are using Groups in your course, you can use **Group mode** to limit the availability of a survey to a particular group.

## Restrict Access

You can **restrict access** to the Survey activity if you like. For example, you may want students to complete a certain number of weeks of the course before they answer questions about online delivery.
