Messaging is a helpful way to quickly communicate with students from within your course. This section will show several methods for using this tool.

# Enabling Messaging

If you want to communicate with students using the messaging function, first enable this through the **Messages **preferences. The following settings need to be enabled to use messaging.

In the upper-right corner of the course, select messaging by clicking the speech bubble icon, then select the gear menu icon to open the settings panel.

Select the circle next to **My contacts and anyone in my courses**. Messaging is now enabled.

# Method 1: Messaging from the user menu

This section will explore several methods for messaging users from the user menu. 

**Note**: This message is available from within the course only and is **not** part of MacEwan email.

## Message individual users

Navigate to the user menu from the navigation bar in the top-right corner of the screen, select the **Messages **icon.

On the next screen, search for the user wanting to message in the search bar on the upper-left side of the screen and select the contact from the list.

In the box at the bottom of the page, type the message in the box at the bottom of the screen.

The student will receive a notification in the course and an email notification.

## Message everyone in a course

1. Select **Participants** from the navigation menu on the course main page.
  
2. On the next screen, select the checkbox below **First name / Surname** to select all course participants. At the bottom of the page, locate the menu called **With selected users…**  
Click **Send a message**.
  
3. Type the message in the message box, and then select **Send a Message to # people**.

# Method 2: Messaging from the participants menu

This section will explore several methods for messaging users from the user menu.

## Message individual users

Select **Participants** from the navigation menu on the main course page.

Find the section to add the Folder to and click **+ Add an activity or resource**.

In the **First name / Surname** column, select a course participant by checking the box to the left of the name.

At the bottom of the page, locate the menu called **With selected users…**

Click **Send a message**.

Type the message in the message box, and then click **SEND MESSAGE to 1 PERSON**.
