## Kaltura Media Assignment Overview

The Kaltura Media Assignment activity allows students to submit media from their own Kaltura media library for assessment in a course. Students need to have access to Kaltura for this activity to be used. Media can refer to images, sound, and/or video.

## Adding a Kaltura Media Assignment to your course

With editing turned on, navigate to the section of your course where you would like to add the activity and select **Add activity or resource**.

On the pop-up list that appears, select **Kaltura Media Assignment**.

In the box adjacent to **Name,** give your assignment a name. You can provide a brief description in the description box as well, but it is not mandatory.

You can adjust any of the settings outlined below in the Setting Overview section, if desired, and then click **SAVE AND DISPLAY** or **SAVE AND RETURN TO COURSE** at the bottom of the screen.

## Settings overview

**General**: You can set date parameters for when you want this activity to appear by adjusting the dates within the **Available from** and **Due date **menus. You also have the option to **Prevent late submissions**, **Allow resubmissions**, and **Send email alerts to teachers**.

**Grade**: Under the grade settings, you can set the value for the lesson if you want it to be graded. You have the option of assigning a point grade from 0–100 or using a predetermined scale (scales must first be created). If your gradebook is already set up, assign a category from the **Grade category **drop-down menu. You may also enter a **Grade to pass; **this setting determines the minimum grade required to pass**.**

**Common module settings**: Choose whether or not to **Show** or **Hide** the activity from students in the **Availability** drop-down menu. You can modify group settings in the **Group mode** and **Grouping** drop-down menus. For detailed information on how these settings work, refer to the *Groups* tutorial.

**Restrict Access**: Access can be restricted based on a variety of parameters. Select **Add restriction** and adjust the settings accordingly. This will vary based on the restriction you wish to apply. A detailed overview of access restrictions is covered in the *Assignments Overview *tutorial.

**Completion conditions**: For Completion tracking, you can set for **Students can** **manually mark activity as complete** or **Show activity marked as complete when conditions are met** and adjust conditions accordingly.

**Tags**: Enter any tags you would like to make this activity searchable by tag.

## Student Upload Overview

This section explains how students will use this activity. Media can refer to images, sound, or video.

## How to submit an assignment

Students will navigate to Kaltura Media Assignment and click on it to submit their work.

On the next page, click **ADD MEDIA SUBMISSION**.

This will launch the Kaltura media editor. From this page, the student can either add new media by clicking **Add New** in the top-right corner of the pop-up screen or click **Embed** on the right side of any video in their Kaltura media library.

If **Add New** is selected, students will have the ability to upload media from their computer or their Kaltura Media library, embed a YouTube video, create a Kaltura Capture or a Meeting Room or upload a Kaltura Video Quiz.

## Add new: Media Upload

Follow the steps in the **How to submit an assignment section**. Select **Add new**. 

Select **Media Upload** from the **Add New **menu outlined above.

To upload media, navigate to the location of the file on your computer and drag and drop it into the box below **Upload Media**. Alternatively, you can also navigate directly to the file by clicking on **Choose a file to upload**.

A name must be entered for the file in the box adjacent to **Name** and a description and tags can also be added in their corresponding boxes. Click **Save and embed** when finished.

## Add new: Embed a YouTube video

Follow the steps in the **How to submit an assignment section**. Select **Add new**. 

Select **YouTube** from the **Add New **menu outlined above.

To upload a YouTube video, navigate to the YouTube video you want to embed and copy the URL into the box below **Video Page Link (or Content ID)** and click **Preview**. This should generate a preview on the lower-right side of the screen.

Adjust the description and add any tags in the boxes below the previewed video. Click **Save and Embed**.

Click **SUBMIT MEDIA** to submit the assignment.

On the next screen, select **Continue**.

## Add new: Kaltura Capture

The **Kaltura Capture** option allows a student or instructor to add a screen or webcam recording. Both of these options support audio uploads as well. Follow the steps in the How to submit an assignment section. Select **Add new**.

Select **Kaltura Capture** from the **Add New **menu outlined above.

If you do not have Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder installed on your system, click on either **Download for Windows** or **Download for Mac **and install the program**. **After installing Kaltura Capture, you will have to close the window and repeat step** 1.**

To grant your system permission to open KalturaCapture, click the checkbox and select **Open KalturaCapture**.

Choose the elements you want to record. **Screen** will allow you to record part or all of your screen; you can adjust settings for the screen as indicated in the screenshot below. If you have a webcam, this can also be recorded by selecting **Camera**. You will also have the option to record audio**. **Click the red circle to begin recording.

You can control your recording by using the stop, pause, and cancel buttons. Turn the microphone on/off by clicking the microphone icon. You can also draw on your screen using the pencil icon. To end your recording, click the stop button.

On the screen that pops up, give your recording a title and fill in any description information and tags (this can also be edited later in your Kaltura media library). Click **Save & Upload**.

It will take time for your capture to upload to your Kaltura media library. Once the upload is complete, close Kaltura Capture. You will now be back at the Kaltura Media Assignment screen. Click **ADD MEDIA SUBMISSION**.

You should see your screen capture in your media library (if you do not, just be patient, it will eventually show up). Click **Embed **next to the item you wish to upload.

On the next screen, click **Continue**.
