H5P stands for HTML 5 Package. H5P allows a wide variety of interactive content types to be created, including video, formative quizzes, and presentations. H5P content can be created on your mêskanâs site or with a free downloadable program called LUMI.

Arguably, the most significant advantage of H5P is that the activities you create can easily be transferred between your courses and shared with colleagues at MacEwan or elsewhere.

This tutorial explains how to access and organize H5P activities, not how to create them. The specifics of H5P activity types that are available and how to create them can be found at a variety of places online.

Here are two excellent places to start on the H5P website:

- the official H5P** Examples and Downloads** page, [https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications](https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications)
- the **Tutorials for authors** page, [https://h5p.org/documentation/for-authors/tutorials](https://h5p.org/documentation/for-authors/tutorials)

Here is a link to an excellent H5P resource.

## Where to Create H5P Content

To add an H5P activity to your course, you must first create an H5P activity. If you have already created your H5P activity, you can skip to the section of this tutorial called [Adding H5P Content to Your Course](#).

---

## Open the Content bank

On the mêskanâs main page, click on **More **and click on **Content bank**. This is where H5P content that you create in mêskanâs will be stored. Note that the **Content bank** is *only* for H5P content. You also have the option to download and store your H5P activities on your own computer.

## Add a new H5P activity

There are two ways to add an H5P activity to your Content bank.

### Upload from your computer

On the screen that opens from the last step (clicking **Content bank** under the **More **tab), click the **Upload** button.

![image](media://e3555814-aead-437c-ac86-a5acc2230012)

On the screen that appears, you can drag and drop an H5P activity from your computer into the **Upload content** box and then click **SAVE CHANGES**.

To use the file picker instead of dragging and dropping, click **Choose a file…**.

![image](media://91782121-3c96-4b1c-8e2f-0849ac2a59ee)

On the screen that opens after clicking **Choose a file…**, click** Upload a file**,** **and then **Choose File** to find and upload the file from your computer.

When you are done, click **UPLOAD THIS FILE**.

---

## Create a new H5P activity

The other way to add H5P content to your Content bank is to create new content in your mêskanâs course. On the screen that opens after you open the Content bank, click **ADD** and select the type of H5P activity you want to create. From there, make the H5P activity.

To reiterate from earlier, this tutorial explains how to add H5P activities to your mêskanâs course, not how to create H5P activities. To preview example activities, visit [https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications](https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications) . # Adding Existing H5P Content to Your Course

Once you have H5P content in your Content bank or on your own computer, you can add that content to your course.

### Setup

In the top-right corner of the main mêskanâs page, turn** EDIT MODE **on.

![image](media://947d38d6-252f-43f6-b70a-6d4c0ffd7f3e)

Find the section you want to add the Folder to and click **+ Add an activity or resource**.

![image](media://693a2f15-039c-41fd-a548-ebea336086f5)

Click on **H5P** to open a new H5P activity.

![image](media://be999c17-b560-4145-abf9-47f802dc1088)

Give your H5P activity a **Name**.

If you want to share some information about the file before students open it, you can add that information in the **Description** text box. If you do this, be sure to select the tick box under the description.

### Add an existing H5P activity

There are two recommended ways to add an existing H5P activity, depending on where your H5P activity is stored.

Option 1, if your H5P activity is on your computer, is to drag the H5P into the **Package file** box.

Option 2, if your H5P activity is in the Content bank, is to click on the **Content bank (opens in new window)** link. This will open the same window as you saw in the step called [Create a new H5P activity](#). From this window (pictured below), select the H5P you want from the activities listed.

## H5P Options

Decide if you want your activity to be downloadable or embeddable, and if you want the copyright button to appear.

### Grade

Two factors complicate the use of H5P activities that can be graded. Firstly, H5P activities that can be graded *will* be entered into the gradebook; unfortunately, there is no way to turn this functionality off (despite appearances). Secondly, H5P activities are not secure, so they should not normally be used to generate marks that count towards course grades.

### Attempt Options

If the H5P activity that you are using can track attempts, responses, and grades, you can set these options. If the activity does not record these options, changing these settings will have no effect. You can choose to **Enable attempt tracking** (if available), the **Grading method** (which grade to record in the gradebook), and whether students can **Review attempts**. Please note that if you select **Don’t calculate a grade** (pictured below), the H5P activity will be entered into the gradebook with a grade of 0%.

### Common Module Settings

The only option you need to consider in the **Common module settings** is **Availability**, which can also be set on the main course page.

### Restrict Access

You can **Restrict access** to the folder resource if you like.

### Activity Completion

The normal **Activity completion** options are available.

### Tags

The normal **Tags** options are available.

When you are finished, click on **SAVE AND DISPLAY** at the bottom of the page.
